Televize Sony BRAVIA jede na linuxu
Stal jsem se čerstvým vlastníkem velké LCD televize Sony BRAVIA. Jaké bylo moje překvapení, když mezi spoustou papírů, návodů a reklamních materiálů přibalených v krabici jsem našel i papír pojmenovaný:

To mě zaujalo, protože ačkoliv jsem o té televizi nastudoval toho hodně než jsem se ji odvážil koupit, nikde před tím jsem nenašel ani zmínku o linuxu. Asi to nebylo náhodou, protože z nějakých důvodů se tím Sony příliš nechlubí. Dokonce i na Wikipedii píšou pouze opatrně:

Dle GPL, musí Sony zveřejnit zdrojové kódy a to také dělá, ale jako by skoro potají a bez nějakého vysvětlování:

Z této stránky se dostaneme na poměrně dlouhý seznam zařízení, pro které byl použit open source software. Většinou jde o kernel, pár základních knihoven a často i busybox. Dle papíru z krabice byly v mé nové televizi použity následující součástí:

Možná objevuji opožděně Ameriku, ale zatímco pro zařízení typu broadband router, media player nebo různá přenosná zařízení je embedded Linux už naprosto běžný a preferovaný, nenapadlo by mě, že ho objevím i v televizi.

Televize Panasonic také jedou na Linuxu. Mnoho dalších přijímačů, DVD rekordérů, případně DVB-S set-top boxů také.
Upgrade firmware DVB přijímače (televize, set-top boxu, rekordéru, ..) je podporován přímo jednou z DVB norem. Nezáleží tedy jaký OS na televizi běží. Jedná se tzv. DVB-SSU (System Software Update). V (digitalnim) datovem toku totiz neproudi pouze audio a video streamy, ale i mnoho doprovodnych dat (napr. tzv. SI informace). Neni tedy problem odeslat novy firmware. Ono nezáleží ani tak na značce TV, ale na užitém chipsetu. V součastné době téměř všichni velcí výrobci chipsetů pro digitální TV používají linux. A není to jen TV, také DVD recordéry a set top boxy. Jen to není napsáno v manuálch. Asi aby se nevyplašily uživatelé.
